“Writing is something you do alone. It’s a profession for introverts who want to tell you a story but don’t want to make eye contact while doing it.”
― John Green

Flora is one of the first conceptual self-portraits I created and after a life of introversion, shyness and worrying what people think, it was difficult for me to put myself in front of the world with my art. Creating an invisible ‘portrait’ had the dual purpose of revealing my new creative direction, expressed through the vibrant bougainvillea, while still retaining some anonymity as a form of protection. It’s a reminder not to let your fears hold you back but to compromise with them to find a place you feel comfortable.

I photographed ‘Flora’ in spring in front of a neighbour’s bougainvillea bush (which certainly kept their dog entertained for awhile). It was photographed to illustrate the process of using layers and masks in Photoshop, which you can read about here.
